Green Tea vs Matcha: Which Is Less Inflammatory?

Green Tea

Matcha
Neither green tea nor matcha is less inflammatory than the other: both score a 1, the lowest mark on the scale. Matcha is green tea. It is the same leaf, ground into powder instead of steeped and thrown away.
Because you drink the whole leaf, matcha delivers far more catechins per cup, the antioxidants doing the work, and more caffeine along with them. It also brings whatever the soil held, lead included, so buy from a brand that tests its batches. Either way, most of the benefit comes from what the cup pushes out of your day. Swap one sugary drink for green tea or plain matcha, with nothing stirred in.

On the AIP diet
Green Tea
Green tea is allowed on the Autoimmune Protocol, elimination phase included. AIP cuts coffee because the coffee bean is a seed, but tea comes from a leaf, so it stays alongside herbal teas. The usual advice is to keep it moderate and drink it early in the day, since the caffeine can add to the sleep problems many people with autoimmune conditions already have.
Matcha
Matcha is allowed in every phase of the Autoimmune Protocol, elimination included. It is a leaf, and AIP keeps leaf teas. The thing to watch is the dose rather than the status: you swallow the whole leaf, so a bowl of matcha carries more caffeine than a cup of steeped tea. If sleep is already fragile, keep it to the morning and one bowl.
What each one brings
Green Tea
- One of the richest everyday sources of catechins, the antioxidants that survive because the leaves never brown
- Strengthened the body's own antioxidant defences across 38 pooled trials in adults
- Brought down the main inflammation marker
- No sugar and no calories: every cup replaces a drink that would work against you
Matcha
- You drink the ground leaf, so you get far more catechins per cup than steeped tea
- Shade growing loads the leaf with theanine, which takes the edge off the caffeine
- No sugar and no calories in the powder itself
- Allowed in every phase of the AIP protocol, unlike coffee
Watch out for
Green Tea
- In people already healthy, trials show no change; the effect turns up when inflammation is high
- Green tea extract is not the drink, and high doses have been linked to liver damage
- The tannins block iron absorption, so keep it away from meals if your iron runs low
- Still caffeinated, at roughly a third of a coffee per cup
Matcha
- You eat the leaf, so lead from the soil comes with it; buy a brand that tests
- More caffeine per serving than steeped green tea
- High in vitamin K, which matters if you take blood thinners
- Cafe lattes and pre-sweetened blends are mostly sugar and milk
