It is ordinary yogurt with the watery whey drained off. The same spoonful ends up with roughly twice the protein and about half the sugar, and it keeps the live bacteria that did the fermenting.

In the trials on fermented dairy, the main inflammation marker in a blood test came down slightly, and the drop was clearest in people with a metabolic condition. The other markers did not move. So the effect is real and it is small: a good daily food, not a treatment.

Most of the lactose leaves with the whey, and the bacteria have already eaten some of what stayed behind. That is why plenty of people who feel bloated after a glass of milk eat Greek yogurt without any trouble. It is also part of why Greek yogurt sits lower on the inflammation scale than plain milk. If what bothers you is the dairy protein rather than the lactose, straining changes nothing.

The word probiotic on the pot usually adds cost without adding much. When researchers compared probiotic yogurt with ordinary yogurt, the inflammation marker did not differ between them, and ordinary fermentation already leaves live cultures in the pot. What is worth checking is the sugar: a flavoured tub can carry as much as a dessert.

Buy it plain and add the fruit yourself. Low-fat versions are usually the ones that make up for the missing fat with sweeteners and thickeners.

Why Greek yogurt is anti-inflammatory Greek yogurt is anti-inflammatory, and the reason is fermentation rather than any single compound. In the trials on fermented dairy the main inflammation marker in a blood test came down slightly rather than up, and the change was clearest in people whose levels were already raised.
Is Greek yogurt better than regular yogurt?|For most purposes yes, though it is not a different food. Greek yogurt is strained, so the same spoonful holds about twice the protein and roughly half the sugar. The live cultures are the same ones.
Do I need to buy the probiotic kind?|Probably not. Researchers compared probiotic yogurt with ordinary yogurt across dozens of trials and found no meaningful difference in the inflammation marker they measured. Plain yogurt already comes with live bacteria in it.
Can you eat Greek yogurt if dairy upsets you?|Sometimes. Straining takes out most of the lactose, so people who react to milk often handle Greek yogurt fine.
